Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn located in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Ruth was a small child when her father, who was a carnival barker died. Her mother had to perform tasks like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She was a student there. In the midst of only two years in school the young woman left to pursue an acting career. The path she chose was not without obstacles. While in New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines, the theatre work that she wanted eluded. After working as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she quit her job and moved back to Boston. There she made a buck in the ushering industry during the during the day and then at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first role as an actor. Also, she studied drama. She eventually graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
